Community Connection Challenge – Digital Connection Discovery Sessions

Between April and June 2025, the Central Coast Health & Wellbeing Living Lab partnered with three digital innovators to explore how their platforms might support connection, communication, and storytelling among older adults.

Each workshop brought together community members, carers, and aged care professionals to share everyday experiences and reflect on what matters most. At the same time, founders gained valuable insights into customer needs, helping refine their value propositions and approaches.

The SeniorsChannel

Workshops: 30 April and 1 May 2025

The SeniorsChannel provides live and on-demand content designed for older community members to reduce social isolation.

In CCLL workshops, participants explored what makes digital engagement enjoyable and meaningful. They highlighted the reassurance of familiar, TV-style formats and valued activities like trivia, music, and cultural programming. At the same time, they raised important accessibility considerations and reinforced the need for content that supports authentic, not tokenistic engagement.

For industry: familiarity matters. Content that mirrors the simplicity of TV, with clear navigation and low-tech barriers, can build trust and confidence. There is also opportunity to design features that support moments of genuine connection, not just passive viewing.

A Moment With

Workshops: 8 May 2025

A Moment With is a platform for capturing and sharing stories through voice and video.

Participants reflected on the importance of memory, legacy, and intergenerational connection. Many spoke about the regret of not being able to capture a loved one’s voice, and the power of storytelling in strengthening family bonds. Conversations also raised questions around privacy, long-term access to digital records, and finding the right balance between being present in the moment and recording memories.

For industry: memory tools need to be emotionally meaningful but simple to use. Features that enable secure storage, selective sharing, and easy playback across generations will add value, especially when they support safe and respectful spaces for sharing personal stories.

Rel8.app

Workshops: 29 May or 3 June 2025

Rel8.app is a communication platform linking older adults, families, and care providers across aged care settings.

In CCLL workshops, participants considered current challenges in family communication and care updates. Families emphasised the importance of trust, privacy, and genuine communication, while staff highlighted the need for tools that integrate into existing routines without adding to their workload. Everyone agreed that digital systems should strengthen, not replace, human relationships.

For industry: tools must be relational, not just transactional. Simplicity, clarity of purpose, and respect for frontline workflows are essential. Platforms that reduce stress and enable authentic, two-way communication have the potential to stand out in crowded aged care markets.

What we learned

The Discovery Sessions highlighted the importance of community voices in shaping digital innovation.

Key themes:

  • Trust and safety are essential when sharing personal stories, updates, or health information.

  • Familiarity and simplicity help people feel confident using digital tools.

  • Authenticity matters — tokenistic or “box-ticking” content is quickly recognised and rejected.

  • Technology should integrate, not duplicate — tools must fit into existing routines without creating extra burden.

  • Digital should strengthen, not replace, human connection — people want support for genuine relationships, not substitutes.

By centring lived experience, these workshops showed how digital tools can support connection in ways that feel practical, respectful, and meaningful.
